NOTES FROM THE ROAD

Traffic en Route…

Cow crossings and more…

22 November 2018: The routes we are riding on are mostly minor secondary roads or dirt pistes and as we go further south we see less vehicular traffic, but plenty of “other” things on the road — cows and goats crossing, as well as horse and donkey carts in addition to plenty of other Jakartas…

Beautiful Landscapes…

Incredible otherworldly terrain…

21 November 2018: The delta area has some really beautiful wilderness where land and water meet and the face of the terrain changes with the tides, alternately burying and revealing land masses that completely change the visual experience of place…

Navigating across Water…

Bikes on Boats…

20 November 2018: The process of getting the bikes across the water has been interesting with everything from a massive car ferry of the kind we know in the west to the old-school way of simply putting the bikes into a wooden boat and paddling them across to the other shore. Nothing is impossible here…

River Deltas…

Exploring the delta…

19 November 2018: Exploring the delta around the Sine Saloum involves water-crossings as well as riding, and we have been fortunate enough with the boatmen who have not only helped us traverse the rivers, but who have also taken the time to show us some of the special places that can be found navigating the mangrove labyrinths of the tidal basin …

Scooting through Senegal…

Taking the slow road…

18 November 2018: Started our Scoot West Africa journey southward today, leaving from Dakar to the Sine Saloum delta area. We had a chance to get used to riding the “Jakartas” as the small scooter-like motorcycles are called here. The versatile bikes are a common form of transportation for locals here, and lend themselves well to a slow-paced immersive journey…

Point des Almadies…

On the western most edge of Africa…

17 November 2018: Took some time to walk out along the Atlantic coast to Point des Almadies, the western-most tip of land on the mainland African continent, where a mass of rocks stretch out like a finger into the Ocean…

Dakar, Senegal…

Arrived in Dakar for a New Adventure…

16 November 2018: Made it to Dakar, the starting point for our Scoot West Africa moto trip, and the western most point on the African mainland. Excited to be in Senegal and looking forward to an interesting and challenging adventure heading south beyond the Sahara…

PREVIOUS NOTES FROM THE ROAD >

THIS MONTH:

Joining the Scoot West Africa team on a motorbike adventure through Senegal and The Gambia to explore tropical forests and plains of baobab trees beyond the southern edges of the Sahara. The trip is an introduction to new terrain and some of the most interesting culture, history, food, and music on the planet …

COMING UP SOON:

Holiday road trip time. Getting ready to load up the Jeep and heading south for warmer climates and fun times on- and off-road (and maybe discovering some new places on the way)…

Going to explore someplace new in the search for traces of the ancient silk road caravan routes…

Headed back to the deserts of the southwest for some more fun in the sun and sand…

Advanced sand dune training with Barlow Adventures at the Imperial Sand Dunes in southern California. This three day driving and navigation program focuses on moving safely and effectively through large dunefields. Skills-building exercises are intended to improve pace, line choice and vehicle control, as well as developing precision map and compass navigation technique…
