FOCUS: REBELLE U DUNES

Rebelle U, the training companion to the Rebelle Rally, is an innovative program to teach desert driving skills to women who want to compete in the event or who just want to improve their capabilities in this challenging terrain. Established by veteran off-road racer and Rebelle Rally-founder Emily Miller, Rebelle U offers 1-4 day driving and navigation classes in southern California aimed at preparing women to take on vehicle-based adventure. The program is designed to help women learn, build, sharpen, and refine off-roading skills in authentic environments. During our weekend-long Intermediate Dune Driving course at the Imperial Sand Dunes in September 2017 Miller effectively customized the training across a group with varying experience levels, working with participants individually to help us improve our driving techniques and develop our ability to pick better lines through complex sections of dunes. Using a series of structured exercises to build up confidence levels on day one, prepared the group to tackle more free-form driving challenges the following day. Though the primary focus was driving, the weekend also presented opportunities to work on recovery and navigational skills useful in the rally or any foray into the dunes.
